Mercadona now has more than 1,600 stores in Spain

  • After 35 years of growth in Spain, Mercadona has increased the number of its supermarkets beyond 1,600, with a 133 million euro investment to date in 2016.
  • An average of 60 local suppliers partake of the construction of each store, creating jobs for around 100 people.

So far this year, Mercadona has inaugurated 32 new supermarkets, bringing its total number of stores on Spanish soil up to 1,601. In addition, the company has refurbished a further 28 of its stores to adapt them to its Atmosphere Store model, and closed 5 that did not comply with the chain’s standards. Investments in new stores and refurbishments stand at more than 133 million euros so far this year.

Today’s two store openings - one at the Herrera Oria business park, in Madrid (Calle Orduña, 6), and the other on the island of Gran Canaria, in El Hornillo, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de la Tirajana - take the number of Mercadona supermarkets past 1,600.

So far, in 2016, 133 million euros have been invested in building the new supermarkets and refurbishing the existing ones. This investment has derived in an average 60 suppliers employing more than 100 people during the construction stage for each of the stores, to which one must add the company’s technical team, which for 12 months has been working on contracting and creating the design project and the execution of said building work.

Mercadona closed 2015 with a total revenue of 20,831 million euros, a 3% increase over the previous year, and at a 611 million euro profit, which is a 12% rise. In 2015, Mercadona’s activity contributed towards our country’s social and economic development, as showcased by the fact that 85 percent of its purchasing is of Spanish products and services, adding up to more than 15,390 million euros per year.

Furthermore, Mercadona recently announced its international expansion to Portugal. Initially, the company’s objective is to inaugurate 4 supermarkets, which will open their doors in 2019, at an initial estimated investment of 25 million euros, and 200 jobs are set to be created.
